To prevent disruption to the wiki, certain functions and pages are restricted to users with certain user groups. These user groups can either be assigned by an administrator, or automatically granted by the MediaWiki software.

Overview

Unregistered visitors are a part of the * group, and users with a registered account are also part of the user group. Users are automatically promoted into the autoconfirmed pseudo-group after they have made ten edits over a period of four days.

User groups

A list of system-generated technical permissions is available at Special:ListGroupRights.

Automatically granted groups

Unregistered users

Unregistered users may view any article on the wiki, but may not edit until they have registered an account.

Registered users

Registered users have the ability to edit most pages on the wiki immediately after registering an account and verifying their e-mail address.

Autoconfirmed users

Some pages may be protected from editing due to high visibility or vandalism. Users with the autoconfirmed pseudo-group may edit pages that are semi-protected, such as the Main Page. The page move tool is also restricted to autoconfirmed users.

Administrators and Bureaucrats

Administrators

Administrators are users with access to certain tools to ensure site security. They can block and unblock users from editing, protect and delete pages, and edit fully protected pages. There is no current process for requesting adminship.

Bureaucrats

Bureaucrats are trusted users who have the ability to modify user accounts. They have access to Special:UserRights, enabling them to add users to the bureaucrat group (but not remove them), and the ability to add users to the administrator, bot, and interface administrator groups. There is no current process for requesting bureaucratship.

Functionary groups

Some groups grant access to specialized tools.

Interface administrators

Interface administrators can edit site-wide CSS, Javascript, and JSON pages, and the respective pages in another user's userspace.

Suppressors

Suppressors can hide log entries, revisions, and usernames from non suppressors, including administrators and bureaucrats.

Check users

Check users have the ability to view the IP addresses and other technical information associated with an account.

File uploaders

File uploaders have the ability to upload and overwrite files, which is not automatically granted to prevent abuse.

Patrollers

Patrollers have the ability to mark a revision as "patrolled", meaning that it has been reviewed for any disruptive editing. They also have access to the "rollback" right, allowing them to revert recent changes by any user with a single action.

Bots

Accounts that perform automated edits are added to the bot user group, which allows their actions to be treated as an automated process.
